And I don't know whether you mean to use it five days a week ten hours a day, or is it just one occasional day every now and then. But I'm sure it's not going to last very long if you choose to overdo it, because it is basically a laptop computer just differently shaped.
Laptops don't like heat, and there really is no air inside the Mini, so you should at least think of running it inside a refrigerator or something, because when the case gets even noticeably hot the inside is almost melting. No I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just saying it might not be the brightest idea. So, you'd be running the risk, every single time, of failure.

This means you can not rely on the daw for mission critical work. I wouldn't risk a clients time and my reputation on a gamble like that. The Mac Mini comes as a 'server' model, which would indicate to me that it's intended to be a capable of constant and long term use. I know a couple of people running PT on their Mac Minis and so far, no one has reported any problems. Pretty staggering that the current Mac Mini as more powerful than a Mac Pro.
Makes you wonder what Apple might finally release next year as a 'Pro' computer. Yes there are Server Minis, but it basically means it has server license and two hard drives instead of one someone told me those are better quality hard drives but I wouldn't trust that info as those still need to be 2,5" drives.
In fact, not many servers do much work -- their purpose is just "to be there" and they're mostly idle. Workstations do lot of work and are designed to deal with heat. Actually where you have the fan aimed is NOT the place to do it. That little slot at the back of the mini is it's air output - at least it is on my mid model. Not exactly sure where they pull the air in from but I'd guess the slot on the superdrive which the newer versions don't have.
I know mine gets hot just running some HD video from YouTube; have never seen rpm on the fan though. Typically at F I see fan speeds of to rpm. Normal room temp operation with no video from YT is about rpm. I have seen a post from an intel engineer saying that anything under that is fine. As you approach the thermal limit the CPU has many mechanisms to self protect clock reduction etc.
If the thermal design can keep these temps there no outward performance change will be seen. The minis are Core 2 duos and do not produce the heat that the current 45Watt i7 ivy bridge CPUs do.
The mini is a cool running machine - as is the 35W i5 Mini. There is a thread on the DUC about the minis and page after page is positive and dare I say glowing. Not a single negative.

But I continue to test and ponder. Is 90degC the new norm?? I have an Aluminium Heatsink from a powermac sitting atop my mac mini. It dissipates the heat and i,m sure the fan doesnt kick in as much. It may all be in my imagination tho :D. I really thought the mini would be a nice upgrade but I can't abide the thermal design as a good thing. Crazy as it sounds I don't see any reasonable Apple computer coming down the pike for me!
The MacPro will no doubt be serious overkill and very expensive. I don't like all in ones and the imac will just be the same thermal design I believe.

Lastly the Retina looks like a possibly better thing but there is no way I will work on a 15" screen all day no matter how gorgeous so would be paying quite a bit for something I don't need. Most interesting going forward It may all be in my imagination tho :D That's good. Another thing to do is to elevate the Mini off the table top so air gets all around it. Did that with mine and it helped. The thing with putting stuff on top of the Mini is not to put anything too heavy on it. That case isn't the sturdiest of things and the top will actually flex a bit with something that concentrates it's weight towards the middle.
If that heatsink overlaps the edges then that will help support it the heatsink. If the weight overlaps the edges, then the thing can weigh almost as much as one can imagine. The Mini case is very very very well built and tough as the warm place. Lifting the thing up an ince is better solution, it works really well.
FWIW: I tested all of these in isolation and combination a Raising the internal fan speed b taking the bottom lid off c raising the mini d adding external fan wither pointed in or at the mini In all of these the basic temperature profile of the mini was unchanged.
To do this required the open case as well as external fans.
